Illegal cigarettes worth R100k seized by SAPS

Following a tip-off by an informant, police discovered a cache of illegal cigarettes worth R100 000 in a house in the Hazyview Township on November 25.

A suspect was arrested on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods and illegal cigarettes and denied bail during his first court appearance. A second suspect managed to flee the scene and police are searching for the person.

As crimes are expected to increase leading up to the festive season, community members are urged to be more vigilant and report all crimes or suspicious activity to the SAPS.

The local police will also take part in the 16 days of Activism for no violence against women and children campaign with several activities aimed at empowering women and to show that police are taking domestic violence seriously.

The police station is home to a care room run by the Greater Rape Intervention Programme (GRIP), where help, advice and shelter is provided to victims of rape and domestic violence. Community members who experience such problems are invited to visit the care room and find out how GRIP can assist them.

For more information, contact GRIP on 013-752-5993 or the police station on 013-737-8284.
