Honouring Alfie at Sanbonani’s 30th birthday

Alfred Sihlabela (72) started working at Sanbonani Hotel Resort and Spa in 1964. At the time, it was still a citrus farm, where he worked as a cook for 11 years. He left to work at the Da Gama Dam, but after a few years returned to the farm in 1983.

Unable to make a profit out of their sour oranges, the farm shut down and became a resort instead. “They started building in 1986,” he related.

At Sabie River Mineral, Sihlobela worked as a driver. Today he is a maintenance supervisor and driver as well as a trainer of staff. According to him, he still feels as energetic as when he started.

“I am not tired,” he said. “I like the place, I am happy here and I have never had a problem with anyone,” he added. Sanbonani is clearly happy to have him, honouring him with a cheque for his years of service at the 30-year gala celebration at the resort last month.

He was accompanied by his wife, Stella, who has also worked for Sanbonani since it opened. The father of 11 children and grandfather of more than 17 grandchildren advises that the key to happiness at your job is to respect people and not take anything personally.
