Three die when car collides with a tree

The area of the accident.

Failure to obey traffic rules is suspected to have led to an accident which saw three people’s lives snuffed out earlier this month.

The incident occurred last Saturday at about 01:50 on the R536 road near Hoxanne, between Hazyview and Kruger Gate, when the driver of a sedan lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree.

All three occupants died on the scene. It later emerged that the driver was a traffic officer attached to the Bushbuckridge Local Municipality.

Although the police are still investigating the incident, human error cannot be ruled out at this stage. Mpumalanga community safety, security and liaison MEC, Pat Ngomane conveyed his condolences to the families.

Ngomane said that this accident, along with others that occurred on that same weekend in which eight other people were killed, is an indication that plans for the festive season needed to be intensified to curb the carnage on Mpumalanga’s roads.

“We need to start now, and put in place intensive strategies as the festive season is approaching, which is usually characterised by high volumes of traffic and increased road crashes.

“We will also not tolerate any lawlessness, as traffic officers will be deployed on all major routes,” he said.
