Informal traders next to the R40 near Hazyview apparently grabbed the opportunity to make an extra penny over the Easter weekend.
They have been warned on numerous occasions about the illegality of operating on this stretch of road and the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) had on occasion demolished the stalls.
The traders, however, erected their stalls again.
While few of them were operating lately, there was a clear increase of active stalls over the weekend. On Monday no fewer than 49 stalls along a stretch of about 500 metres were counted.
Hazyview Herald reported previously about several consultations held between Sanral, the traders, and the producers of the fresh produce in the area.
Government would identify possible fresh-produce market areas along main roads, thus stimulating local economic development.
