Mountains of the Lowveld conquered on foot

Runners with more than the normal amount of guts recently completed the Munga Trail, a 400-kilometre route from Belfast to the Forever Resort Blyde River.

This ultra-challenge includes 120 hours of non-stop racing over mountains and through forestry roads.

Bennie Roux crossed the line in a new record time of 86 hours and 32 minutes to defend his 2017 title.

The race brought quite an amount of drama due to mist and rainy conditions as well as technological failure. It is GPS navigated and at least one runner’s GPS device failed, costing him a neat second or even first place. Eventually Pavel Paloncy, a Czech runner, managed to finish in a credible third place.

Nicky Booyens dominated the women’s race to finish third overall and defend her title in a new record time of 86 hours, 32 minutes.

Only nine runners completed the gruelling run.
